Custom styles
When a design and Adjust the design don't go far enough, make a style of your own. Start from one of φ's designs or styles, change what you want, and use it for any project in the vault.
Make a style
- On the project's Export page, open Adjust the design (or Options on Share a copy) and choose Edit styles….
- In Export styles, pick the design or style closest to what you want under Built into φ, and choose Duplicate. φ's own styles can't be changed; the copy is yours.
- Change what you like. Every change saves as you make it, and the preview beside the settings shows the first pages.
- Choose Use for this project.
What a style can change
| Group | For example |
|---|---|
| Type | The text and title faces, size, line spacing, paragraph indent, justification and hyphenation. |
| Sizes | Book, part and chapter titles, chapter labels, headings and notes. |
| Colours | Text, titles and headings, labels and running heads, rules. In black ink they print as greys. |
| Page | Two-sided (bound) pages and the four margins. |
| Chapter openings | Where chapters start, the chapter label (Chapter One, Chapter 1, One, 1, I), and how the first paragraph opens. |
| Running heads and page numbers | What the heads say and where the numbers sit. |
| Contents | Whether there is one, and how deep. |
| The book's own pages | The title, copyright, dedication and other pages. |
| Notes | Footnotes at the foot of the page or at the end, and how they're numbered. |
φ keeps every value within what prints and reads well: a margin too small for the binding or a colour too faint to read is brought back within range, and the export's check says so.
Share, back up and remove styles
- Your styles live in the vault (in a hidden
.poiesis-stylesfolder), so they travel with it and sync with it. - Export… saves a style as a file to give someone; Import a style… adds one.
- Deleting a style moves it to the vault's trash. Projects that used it go back to φ's default style.
